UK Net Zero Carbon

UKNZ Standard

The UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard (pilot) is an industry led initiative designed to create a consistent definition and framework for net zero carbon buildings across the UK. It has been developed through collaboration between leading organisations including the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors, UK Green Building Council, and Chartered Institution of Building Services Engineers.

The standard aims to provide clear guidance on how buildings can achieve net zero carbon across both operational and embodied carbon. It supports consistent measurement, reporting, and verification, helping clients, designers, and contractors align with the UK’s broader net zero targets.

As a pilot, the standard is being tested and refined with input from industry stakeholders, ensuring it is practical, measurable, and scalable. It addresses key challenges such as defining carbon boundaries, setting performance targets, and ensuring transparency in reporting.

With increasing regulatory pressure and client demand for sustainable construction, the UK Net Zero Carbon Buildings Standard represents a significant step towards a unified and robust approach to carbon management in the built environment.

Key Highlights

  • Industry led framework for defining net zero carbon buildings in the UK

  • Covers both embodied and operational carbon

  • Supports consistent measurement, reporting, and verification

  • Developed collaboratively across major UK industry bodies

  • Designed to align with national net zero targets

  • Currently in pilot phase with ongoing industry input and refinement

Sterling enables organisations to operationalise the principles of the standard by embedding carbon measurement into the estimating process from the outset. Key areas of alignment include:

  • Embodied carbon estimating, using detailed resource based data (A1 to A5 and beyond)

  • Integration of cost and carbon, supporting dual currency decision making

  • Alignment with PAS 2080 principles, enabling carbon reduction across infrastructure and building projects

  • Lifecycle carbon modelling, supporting whole life carbon assessments in line with emerging standards

  • Real time data integration, including sources such as EPD databases via EC3 and 2050 Materials
